Spartans All Set To Open Season SundayBrooklyn Dodgers Opponents Of Portsmouth Professionals In Opening Game at Portsmouth. Game at 3 p.m.
The Portsmouth Spartans will usher in their 1931 football season, and their second as a member of the National Professional League, Sunday afternoon in Universal Stadium.
Their opponents will be the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the game is scheduled to get underway, promptly at 3 o'clock.
Coach Potsy Clark will conclude intensive drilling for the opener with light workouts today and Saturday, and the Spartans will be "rearin' to go" when the referee toots the opening blast Sunday.
In the starting backfield the fans are likely to see Glenn Presnell, All-American from Nebraska and formerly of the Tanks; Father Lumpkin, the "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech"; Swartz of Washington State and Clark.
A squad of some thirty candidates will see service, with the weeding-out process taking place after the first game is on the books.
The game has been well advertised for the past several weeks, and all roads will lead to Portsmouth, Sunday afternoon, where the fans will usher in a new grid season.
